Capello seeks urgent FA talks over his future

Fabio Capello's England future was in doubt last night after he admitted wanting urgent talks with his FA bosses.

The Italian is under huge pressure after England were sent crashing out of the World Cup in humiliating fashion by Germany.

Capello, who insisted “we played well”, vowed not to quit his £6million-a-year post and the FA face a huge compensation pay-out if they sack him.

He said: “I want to speak with the chairman to decide my future. But resign, no. No. Absolutely no.

“We have to wait until I come back to London. We have time to decide. We have to decide whether he [FA chairman Sir Dave Richards] has confidence in me or not. We have to wait. Sorry. No more.”

Capello and his England squad fly home tonight and he is expected to meet Club England chiefs – including Richards and Sir Trevor Brooking – later this week.

But after insisting England could get to the final, Capello fell short of even the FA’s bare minimum of a quarter-final place.

They may now want him to quit, but Capello will not walk away without the pay-off his is entitled to following the hasty renegotiation of his contract shortly before the finals.

However, England’s heaviest-ever defeat in a tournament has left Capello’s future hanging by a thread and he did his credibility no good by claiming: “We played well. Germany is a big team. They played a good game.”

A clause in his contract allowing both parties to review their position after the World Cup was removed last month.

That now looks a costly mistake and Capello last night tried to excuse England’s defeat by insisting the referee not giving our “equaliser” was the game’s turning point.

Capello said: “I’m sure that a big mistake from the referee was too important for us to go forward.

“You don’t know the psychology of the players. From 2-1 to 3-1 we played better than Germany. Lampard’s chance, it would have been different. It’s too big a mistake.”
