World Cup holders Italy were forced to fight back from 1-0 down as they earned a 1-1 Group F draw in their opener with Paraguay in Cape Town.
De Rossi: Grabs the equaliser
The Azzurri were stunned by a late first-half header from Antolin Alcaraz which handed Paraguay a shock lead.
While the defending champions' passing was clearly superior in the first 45 minutes on a rainy night, chances were few and far between as Paraguay held firm at the back.
Italy's lack of cutting edge was punished though in the 39th minute when Alcaraz rose to head home from a deep free-kick.
The Azzurri gained some momentum in the second half and were level on 63 minutes when Paraguay keeper J Villar punched fresh air and allowed Daniele De Rossi to blast home from close range.
