Fabio Capello last night scored a major own goal on the eve of naming his provisional World Cup squad.
Capello will subject his England players to trial by internet after agreeing to mark and rate each of them for a website during the World Cup finals in South Africa.
The England boss has signed up to a commercial venture, the Capello Index and Capello XI, which will be a Fantasy Football style game for fans on the internet.
But it is the Capello Index in which the England manager will give newspaper-style player ratings for each player within two hours after every game based on their passing, tackling and overall performance.
It is the first time Capello - who already earns £5.5m-a-year from the FA - has done a high-profile commercial deal since becoming England boss.
Capello will risk upsetting players after previously insisting he would not break the managerial code of going public in his criticism of individuals. Players are already notoriously touchy about marks out of ten in newspapers.
But Capello, who insists he is receiving no money up front and will only profit if the Index becomes successful, insisted he is not worried about any backlash from the players.
He said: "It's good for the fans and for me it's good, no problem, no pressure. I don't see it as a problem.
"It will be easy to speak with the players about their performances. I can say: 'look, your index is no good, you'll have to train more.'
"I made this to help the fans make something different. It's not just about the money, it's just something different."
Capello has agreed to rate the players during the World Cup after staging a trial run - selecting from Europe and the Premier League's top six teams - and the website has already unveiled his top choices from the past few weeks.
And Capello has picked Joe Cole, Sol Campbell, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes, who are not expected to be in his provisional 30 man squad today. But Tottenham's Ledley King is the second highest rated player in Europe.
His top team of England players from the Premier League (no English keeper in top six):
Ledley King, Michael Dawson, Sol Campbell, Gary Neville, Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes, Joe Cole, Gareth Barry, Theo Walcott, Wayne Rooney
