Wayne Rooney is out of Manchester United's title run-in.
Sir Alex Ferguson claimed his 34-goal striker suffered a groin injury in training and will miss United's final two games of the season.
But Sunday Mirror Sport also understands that Rooney continues to be troubled by a knee problem as well as the ankle injury that saw him limp out of the Champions League exit against Bayern Munich and the Manchester derby.
That is bad news for England coach Fabio Capello as he finalises his preparations for the World Cup Finals in South Africa. The loss of Rooney would be a savage blow to England’s chances.
Ferguson said: “Wayne did his groin on Thursday.
“We were doing simple possession exercises and he tweaked his groin.
“We got him out training on Friday and he tried it, but it wasn’t good enough.
“We have to look at maybe two or three weeks.”
Rooney suffered ankle damage when United lost 2-1 in Munich on March 30 and missed the subsequent home defeat to Chelsea.
Ferguson gambled on his fitness in the return against Bayern – and saw Rooney limp off as United went out of the Champions League.
He looked unfit against Manchester City last week and was again substituted.
Rooney is expected to be named PFA Player of the Year tonight.
Capello will be in the audience and is sure to make a personal check on the striker.
