The veteran goalkeeper had been indivisibly associated for Middlesbrough for 11 years but Teesside's loss is west London's gain, as he continues a highly impressive spell at Fulham.
Schwarzer's performances for Fulham last season were extraordinary, propelling them to a high seventh-place finish and a Europa League spot; landmark wins over Arsenal and Manchester United were largely attributable to his inspired saves.
It would have not have escaped his attention that Middlesbrough were relegated at the end of that season. It was little surprise, too, when he received Fulham's player of the year award.
Club manager Roy Hodgson has come to rely on him just as much as Australia are likely to.
