Diego Forlan has insisted he will stay in Spain next season - despite interest from Tottenham.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has been tracking the ex-Manchester United flop who has been one of the stars of the World Cup.

Redknapp could now even turn his attentions to Forlan's strike partner Luis Suarez who will be banned for just one game - tomorrow's semi final with Holland in Cape Town - after his sending off against Ghana in the quarter final.

But Atletico Madrid striker Forlan, who took eight months before scoring after his move to United, says he will not come back to England.

Forlan, 31, said: "I am very happy in Madrid and I have three years left on my contract with Atletico. I will not go.

"Now I want to have another season as good or better than the one just completed."

Uruguay have suffered an injury blow as Ajax midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro is out of the World Cup after sustaining a foot injury and will miss the semi final along with Suarez.

But Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez has defended Suarez and insisted that his handball to deny Ghana a penalty in extra time of their quarter final is part of the gam.

Tabarez said: "It was punished, a penalty was awarded and Ghana missed it. That is part of the game and it is in the rules.

"Now we are without him for the semi final so we have punished. But we are proud of what we have achieved and want to go further."
