Injured England captain Rio Ferdinand has been banned by Manchester United from flying out to South Africa to back his teammates' bid to win the World Cup.

Ferdinand, 31, yesterday excitedly revealed on Twitter that he was planning to return to the England camp and “support the lads”.

But less than an hour later he was forced to explain to fans that was now not possible.

He added on the social networking site: “I would love to go back to South Africa now to cheer on England but unfortunately the medical staff have said I need total rest for two weeks.”

Ferdinand stayed with the squad for the 1-1 draw against the USA last weekend and then returned home for a medical check-up on his knee at Manchester United.

His club yesterday said: “Rio has been assessed by club medical staff at Carrington this week and is making good early progress from his knee injury.

“Medical staff have advised a two-week recuperation period with his family before returning to Carrington to complete the rehabilitation process.”

That means it is very unlikely Ferdinand will be able to travel to South Africa for the rest of the World Cup.

Asked on Twitter about his experience of the World Cup and whether he would like to return, Ferdinand had earlier said: “Loved it (bar the injury moment) and yeah, am aiming to go back and support the lads!”

The skipper also added that the mood in the England camp was “good” and added: “The lads are looking forward to the next game.”
