Watch this space: not so well known bu Blaise Nkufo's eye for the ball up fron saw him score five times to help Switzerland qualify

Nkufo may not be a familiar name in England, but he has been around for a while.

One of the game’s late developers, he first made his debut for the national side seven years ago but spent five years out of the side before returning to the fray just in time for the World Cup qualifying campaign.

Kufo formed a deadly strike partnership with captain Alexander Frei, scoring five goals and helping Switzerland to pip Greece to automatic qualification.

Kufo was born in Zaire (today known as DR Congo) and played for teams in Switzerland, Qatar and Germany before settling at FC Twente in the Netherlands.

Since he arrived in 2003 his form has been nothing short of prodigious, topping the club’s scoring charts for the last six seasons and scoring over 100 goals at better than a goal every two games.

Kufo’s form in front of goal has been a major factor in Twente’s recent success under former England manager Steve McLaren, with the club currently sitting atop the Eredivisie table with 11 wins from 13 games.

At the age of 34, next summer will probably be his first and last World Cup, but he may yet turn a few heads.
